The West of England University

History of  West of  England University.





In 1595 the Bristol Society of Merchant Venturers' Navigation School is founded.
In 1969 Bristol Polytechnic is founded.
In 1992 Bristol Polytechnic gains University status, becoming the University of the West of England (UWE).

Today UWE Bristol is the largest provider of Higher Education in the South West of England.
There has been strong emphasis over the years on building close partnerships with businesses and organisations locally, nationally and internationally.

Location and Transport
UWE Bristol has three Campuses (Frenchay, Glenside and Bower Ashton) around Bristol, plus further afield UWE Gloucester and Hartpury College.
The University is easy to reach from most areas of the country, situated close to the M4 and M5 motorways. There are also excellent train and coach connections.
Bristol Parkway station is very convenient for the University's Frenchay Campus and there are regular buses directly to campus.
There is free bus travel for students in UWE Bristol-owned accommodation.
London is just 90 minutes from Bristol by train. Travel by coach is easy too, with an extensive network of routes. Bristol Airport has direct flights to many UK and European cities

Course Flexibility

More than 600 courses to choose from.
Many courses can be studied either full-time (with or without a sandwich placement year) or part-time.
Most of the programmes are modular.
Teaching Standards
UWE Bristol has consistently scored ‘excellent’ in the teaching assessments carried out by the Quality Assurance Agency.


Research Standards
UWE Bristol has an outstanding reputation for its user-led research applicable to real world problems.
Over the past 10 Year UWE Bristol has more than doubled its research income from organisations such as research councils, charities and the government.
The RAE 2008 results showed that over a third (37%) of research carried out at UWE Bristol was considered to be world-leading or internationally excellent.
UWE Bristol has been granted the European Commission's HRExcellence in Research Award, which recognises the University's outstanding work in developing and supporting its research staff.
Academic Strengths
Strong focus on employability – 94.4% of UWE Bristol graduates are in work or further study six months after graduating (DLHE 2013). UWE Bristol is a top 7 university in England for graduate employment (HESA 2013).
Student Facilities

UWE Bristol is investing £220m in infrastructure and facilities by 2020 to improve students’ experiences. This will include a new Business School building, new student accommodation, a central plaza and transport hub, and refurbished teaching and learning spaces.
Learning facilities include: a 24-hour computer lab, libraries on each Campus, a mock courtroom, a forensic Crime Scene House, a wind tunnel, a flight simulator, a financial trading room, and a host of specialist labs and studios.
Social facilities include: a high-quality Centre for Sport, an on-campus cinema, a Centre for Performing Arts, a NatWest Bank, four bars, numerous shops and cafés.

Students' Union

Students can join over 160 different sports clubs, societies, community networks and volunteer activities.
The Students’ Union has over 1,100 student reps throughout the university.
A new building for the Students’ Union will be ready in summer 2015 integrated within the new heart zone of the Frenchay Campus.
UWE Bristol Students’ Union was awarded the Green Impact Students’ Unions Silver Award at the annual NUS Services Convention in March 2013. The award demonstrates the Students’ Union’s dedication to sustainability.
UWE Bristol Students’ Union were named as the runner up for the NUS Innovation in Internationalising the Student Experience award at the 2013 National Union of Students' Internationalisation Awards.
In 2013 the UWE Bristol Students’ Union won two awards for the second successive year at the annual South West Fairtrade Business Awards.
Sport


The Centre for Sport on the Frenchay Campus provides extensive facilities including two state of the art fitness suites, an indoor climbing wall, squash courts and a water based astro pitch.
The standard of facilities is such that UWE was listed as a London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics Pre-Games Training Camp.
A comprehensive programme of friendly social sports is offered to engage all abilities in sport.
The Students’ Union offers opportunities to play in around 40 sports competitively.
Sports bursary awards and support programmes are available for talented athletes.
Recent/Prospective New Builds
Opening of the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL), a joint initiative between UWE Bristol and Bristol University in 2012.
The new UWE Bristol International College opened in September 2012.
Major refurbishment of our Glenside Campus in 2012/13.
Recent developments on the Bower Ashton Campus included a new Media Hub with industry-standard radio and television broadcasting suites, new specialist Drama facilities, a new student learning zone and extended catering, library and Students’ Union facilities.
As part of the UWE Bristol Materplan a total investment of £220m is planned in infrastructure and facilities by 2020, including: a new building for the Faculty of Business and Law, new student accommodation for 2014/15, a new Students’ Union building to open in summer 2015 and a central plaza and transport hub.
A new football stadium for Bristol Rovers Football Club (BRFC) is planned on the land adjacent to Frenchay Campus.






Availability of Part-Time Work
The Students’ Union JobShop helps students find the right job to fit around their studies. 4,437 part-time jobs were advertised through our Student JobShop in 2012/13.
The JobShop also offer tips on specific job hunting and advice on employment rights, tax, National Insurance, etc.
1,200 UWE Bristol students have undertaken paid internships (2010 – 2013) via our funded internship programme – one of the largest in the UK.
6,700 organisations and employers have advertised one of more opportunities with us for placements, jobs and internships in the last two year.
